Chambal River Safari Experience
Swap the dry forests of Ranthambore for the calm of a river morning. A short drive of about 45 km from Sawai Madhopur brings you to Palighat, where motorboats head out into the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary. The Chambal still runs clear and largely unpolluted — a genuine rarity among Indian rivers — and that clean water supports wildlife that has vanished from most other waterways.
The sanctuary is unique on India's conservation map: a stretch of protected river shared by three states — Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh — first protected in 1979. Its best-known resident, the gharial, is rarer in the wild than many tiger populations — every glimpse of those long, snub-nosed jaws counts as a special moment.
Wildlife You Can Spot
Gharial
The critically endangered long-snouted crocodile, distinctive for its narrow jaws and bulbous nose. Chambal hosts one of the last viable populations in the wild.
Mugger Crocodile
A broad-snouted marsh crocodile often seen basking on sandbanks alongside gharials. More aggressive than its long-snouted cousin.
Gangetic River Dolphin
A rare and elusive freshwater dolphin that occasionally surfaces in the deeper pools of the Chambal. A truly special sighting.
Turtles
Eight species of turtles inhabit these waters, including the Indian softshell turtle and the roofed turtle, often seen on logs and rocks.
Indian Skimmer
A striking river bird that skims the water with its distinctive orange-and-black beak. Frequently spotted on sandbars and riverbanks.
Migratory Birds
Over 300 bird species including ospreys, plovers, sandpipers, and flocks of bar-headed geese that winter along the Chambal.

Important Guidelines
Always wear your life jacket throughout the boat ride. Do not attempt to swim or bathe in the river — crocodiles and gharials inhabit these waters. Avoid throwing any waste into the river.
